General Conversation
Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a brain malformation that takes place throughout embryonic property development of the cerebellum as well as 4th ventricle. The cerebellum is the area of the mind that assists coordinate movement, as well as is also included with cognition and behavior. The 4th ventricle is a room around the brain that networks liquid from inside to around the outside of the human brain. DWM is characterized by underdevelopment (small size and irregular location) of the mid component of the brain called the cerebellar vermis, cystic augmentation of the 4th ventricle and also enhancement of the base of the head (posterior fossa). DWM is sometimes (20-80 %) associated with hydrocephalus, where blockage of the typical flow of back fluid leads to excessive amounts of liquid building up in and around the brain. This leads to abnormally high pressure within the skull and swelling of the head, and also can lead to neurological disability.
